Program Description Are you the go-to person when someone needs information? Library and information technicians (LITs) are experts at organizing knowledge and data. They use their superior interpersonal skills to serve customers and help them find the answers to their information questions. If you are resourceful, detail-oriented, and tech-savvy, and if you have a passion for research and an interest in promoting libraries, a career as a library and information technician is right for you. NOTE: Students enrolling in this program are required to purchase their own laptop. This program will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to work in a variety of types of libraries, resource centres, cultural and heritage organizations and related industries. You will learn all aspects of information management from selecting, acquiring and organizing information to providing access to carefully-curated resources. Through simulations and hands-on activities, you will develop superior customer service, advocacy and marketing skills. You will also practise engaging clients through programming and instruction. Students focus on: Analyzing information requests, selecting appropriate sources, developing and conducting information searches, evaluating information and presenting results Selecting and acquiring materials Deriving, editing and/or creating catalogue records Maintaining serials control and circulation systems Creating marketing and promotional materials and organizing events Creating and delivering information literacy, instructional and programming activities Compiling bibliographies and writing reports Developing and implementing systems to manage archival collections and corporate records. As a graduate, you will be well-prepared to use your technology skills to acquire, prepare and organize materials and assist users in locating appropriate resources.
